What if God worked at Starbucks?

I saw this advert at Starbucks a week ago and knew there was a blog in there somewhere just waiting to jump out - although I didn't know what. But now I've got it!

Tweaks

Let's begin by making a few 'tweaks' to the advert's message:

I promise perfection.
After all, it's your life. That's why I've put my name on you and promise that I will make you perfect - like me. If not, I will make you again until you are.

God - the Barista

If God was a barista working at my local Starbucks I think he would appreciate the re-worded version of the advert above. When we invite God into our lives, He is not satisfied to leave us as we are - in our sin. He rolls up his sleeves and gets to work deep within who we are, in our heart, spirit and lives. He brings about change and transformation. Moving us from where we are to where He wants us to be. Changing us from who we are to who He has made us to be.

However, like a good cup of coffee His work often takes time.

1. First the coffee beans need to be ground so they can release their flavour. God also needs to grind the parts of us than need to be ground down - some of the edges that need to be knocked off so we can become more 'god-shaped'. And as a result of the grinding down, we will have a god-flavour to release. It is often when we go through the hard times that our true character is revealed and developed.

2. Now the coffee needs to percolate. As the Holy Spirit flows through us, it picks up the flavours of the ground coffee and seeps into the rest of our lives and out into the world around us. Bit by bit, drip by drip, God is at work in us, changing us, flavouring us, infusing His spiritual DNA within us.

3. God will never give up on us. Just as Starbucks promises in its advert, if it doesn't work the first time, He will keep trying until you are perfect! As God changes us into His likeness, into His perfection - making us holy because He is holy. Even if we mess up the work God has already done within us by falling or failing, God never gives up on us!

4. A good cup of coffee is to be enjoyed. The purpose of the barista creating a cup of coffee-heaven is so that it can be enjoyed! The purpose God is at work in you and me is so that our lives can be enjoyed! Yes, enjoyed by us (the one living the life in the first place) but more importantly by others. The cup of freshly brewed coffee does not drink itself, it is drunk by someone else! Your life is to be enjoyed by other people! The people around you, in your community and in your neighbourhood. In your place of work. We have a god-flavour to share with others and it tastes good!

So let's read those words again and let them sink into our spirits:

I promise perfection.
After all, it's your life. That's why I've put my name on you and promise that I will make you perfect - like me. If not, I will make you again until you are.
